SAHDEA urges strategic, inclusive appointments for key leadership roles

KOTA KINABALU (Dec 1): The Sabah Human Development and Empowerment Association (SAHDEA) congratulates on the formation of the new Sabah Cabinet following the state election.

“We warmly welcome the appointment of Datuk Jafry Ariffin as the new Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment,” said SAHDEA president Arthur Erik.

As the state administration prepares to finalize its leadership team in the coming days and weeks, SAHDEA underscores the critical need for strategic and inclusive appointments to the
remaining open positions. These include key roles such as the chairmanship of critical statutory bodies and government-linked companies (GLCs), as well as leadership positions within key development agencies and district offices.

SAHDEA emphasizes that these appointments are not merely administrative but are pivotal to shaping Sabah’s development trajectory.

The association urges the consideration of leaders with demonstrable commitment and a clear track record in the following areas:
• Youth Empowerment & Sports Development: For roles related to youth and sports, candidates must have a proven agenda for enhancing employability, fostering entrepreneurship, and promoting mental well-being among Sabah’s young population.
• Community & Rural Development: Appointees to portfolios overseeing rural development should possess deep grassroots engagement and innovative strategies for improving infrastructure, digital connectivity, and sustainable livelihoods in underserved communities.
• Human Capital & Education: Leaders in complementary educational and human capital roles must advocate for policies that align technical and vocational education (TVET) with Sabah’s economic needs, and support lifelong learning initiatives.
• Environmental Stewardship: Supporting the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, appointees should champion sustainable tourism models and robust conservation policies that protect Sabah’s natural heritage while supporting local communities.

“While we congratulate the initial appointments, the forthcoming selections for agency leaders will truly define the government’s operational effectiveness and its connection to the people. We hope to see a blend of experienced administrators and dynamic, emerging leaders who reflect Sabah’s diverse talent pool. Their
vision must extend beyond the short term to foster long-term, inclusive growth,” said Arthur.

“Specifically, we advocate for appointments that ensure balanced regional representation, gender inclusivity, and the integration of skilled professionals from various sectors — including technology, social enterprise, and environmental science—into the state’s leadership framework,” he added in a statement on Monday.

SAHDEA remains ready to collaborate with all appointed leaders and portfolios to advance concrete programmes that strengthen socio-economic participation, create tangible opportunities for youth, and institutionalize community-driven development.

The association looks forward to constructive engagement with the fully constituted state government and stands prepared to serve as a partner in promoting human development, empowerment initiatives, and sustainable progress for all Sabahans.
